Introduction
The flame reports in the Cash–Landrum incident are often treated as direct evidence of a powerful propulsion system. Yet the witnesses were observing an extraordinarily bright light at night, under conditions that are known to interfere with normal depth perception, shape recognition, and motion judgement. This does not mean the witnesses imagined what they saw. Rather, it raises a narrower question: could some aspects of the reported flames, pulsing movement, or apparent rise-and-fall behaviour have been influenced by well-documented night-time visual effects?
The answer is that glare and night-time perceptual illusions can plausibly affect how observers judge the shape, distance, and motion of a bright object. However, these effects cannot by themselves explain every feature reported in the Cash–Landrum case, particularly the witnesses’ claims of intense heat and prolonged observation. Importantly, autokinesis does not require deception or faulty memory. The motion genuinely appears real to the observer at the time.

What Illusions Can and Cannot Explain
