Introduction
The most important surviving document in the Cash–Landrum UFO incident is not a photograph, medical record, lawsuit filing or military memorandum. It is John F. Schuessler’s first MUFON case file, compiled for the Mutual UFO Network and Project VISIT and dated 4 March 1981. That file became the foundation on which nearly every later discussion of the case was built. It preserved witness questionnaires, interview notes, sketches, investigator observations and early attempts to identify the reported helicopters. Without it, much of what is known about the case would exist only through later retellings and secondary summaries. At the same time, the file is not a perfect snapshot of events. What Schuessler Gathered by March 1981
The March 1981 report was far more than a narrative account. Surviving indexes of the original file show that Schuessler assembled a package of primary investigation materials rather than a simple article. The collection included MUFON sighting forms, witness questionnaires, sketches of the reported object, event data, telephone interview records, handwritten notes, a site investigation report and an early memorandum examining reported helicopter activity. By the time Schuessler conducted his investigation, the witnesses had already discussed the event with family members, doctors, reporters and UFO organisations.
