If the helicopters were civilian or contractor-operated aircraft, the argument that the witnesses observed a government-controlled aerial operation becomes substantially weaker. However, that does not explain the reported UFO, the alleged heat effects, or why the witnesses believed the helicopters were associated with the object. Conversely, if the helicopters really were Chinooks, that still would not prove they were escorting or controlling the object.
As a result, civilian alternatives occupy a middle position in the debate.
